Joe Nathan Lee
Mr. Joe Nathan Lee 92, widower of Mary Frances Lee transitioned from labor to reward on September 18, 2017. He was born in Greenwood County April 14, 1925 a son of John Henry Lee and Josephine Puckett Lee. He was educated in Greenwood County public school system and graduated from Brewer High School.
Joe moved to Washington DC and was employed with and retired from Silver Springs Maryland Board of Education, Zelco Realty for many years as their personal assistant and worked at RFK Stadium on the weekends. The owners of Zelco Realty continued to keep in contact with him even when He and Frances moved back to South Carolina after living 38 years in Washington.
Joe was always trying to help someone in need and he was loved by all who knew him. He loved shining shoes and was given his own booth inside Franks Car Wash. He literally ran his own taxi cab service for so many individuals taking them to the airport, around town or a drop off service for the shoes he shined and he loved it! The Index Journal published an article on him about his love of shining shoes in 2009 after an 84th birthday celebration was given for him at Franks Car Wash.
Joe was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church since childhood, and presently served on the Trustee and Usher Boards. He was also formerly employed with Percival Tompkins Funeral Home until his wife Frances health failed. Joe had a plethora of clients from his shoe shine business and chaffering that loved him and will miss him dearly.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted sister, Jennie L. Smith of Temple Hills, MD; two nephews, Michael ( Claudette) Franklin of Fort Washington, MD ,Thomas Lee of Greenwood; one niece, Jewel L Holmes of Fort Washington, MD; one great niece, Abigail Mercer of Washington, DC; a special friend, Michael A. Spearman of Greenwood; his very close family the Dorn and Lee families of Greenwood and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11:00am Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Ankoma Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Evening Star Cemetery.
Joe will be placed in the church at 10:00am
Pallbearers will be Trustees. Flower bearers will be Westside Community Club and Friends of the family.
Honorary Escort will be Harmony Masonic Lodge # 37 and Franks Car Wash Mgmt. and Staff
