Mr James Henry Gill, Sr
Mr. James Henry Gill Sr 94, of 1122 East Cambridge Avenue widower Iola Robinson Gill passed January 7, 2017 at his home. He was born June 10, 1922, to the late Willie and Rosa Gill of Allendale County, South Carolina. He reared in a home with his six siblings, where values were rooted in family unity, love of Christ, and respect for mankind. Amidst the support of the family, Christ remained the cornerstone of his life.
"Let the works that I do speak for me was James' motto. He graduated from Allendale High School in 1943. After graduation he joined the United States Navy, where he served in World War II until 1946. In addition, in 1946 James enrolled into South Carolina State College and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Industrial Education and minor in Industrial Arts and Mechanical Drawing.
While at State College, he met and married Iola Robinson. He began employment at a vocational school for Aiken / Edgefield County and worked until 1952, when he received a teacher's position at Brewer High School in mathematics and science departments.
In 1957, James returned to South Carolina State College where he received his Master of Science Degree in Industrial Arts minor in Mechanical Drawing all while he continued to teach at Brewer until the schools integration. At that time, he began to teach at Emerald Junior High School, and later moved to Greenwood High School, where he taught Mechanical Drawing and retired in 1987.
James was a member of Old Mount Zion Baptist Church in Epworth for many years where he served as a Trustee Chairman, Treasurer, and Deacon. Other careers included architect, carpenter, master barber, farmer, bus driver, and entrepreneur.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, his six siblings, and a special uncle Dr. Benjamin J. Sanders.
He is survived by one son, James H. (Carol) Gill Jr. Of Topeka, KS; a daughter, Sharron Gill-Rucker of Greenwood, SC; six grandchildren, Teleathia (Cornelius) Brown who was reared in the home, James H. Gill III, Gregory Gill, Michael Gill, Dominique Rucker, and J'Shawn Gill; three great-grandchildren Raja Logan, Tiana Strong, and Nevaeh Wideman; sister-in-laws, Bernice Gill, of Allendale, and Maggie R. Abney of Greenwood, SC. Mr. Gill was blessed with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
