Mrs Eugenia Evans
Mrs. Eugenia Mae Holmes Evans, 98, affectionately known as ‘’Aunt Gena’, ‘Ma Gena’, ‘Cousin Gena’ , ‘Gena Mae’, and the ‘Mayor of Cokesbury’, widow of the late Arthur Evans, entered eternal rest on Monday, September 26, 2016, at National Healthcare of Greenwood, South Carolina.
Eugenia, the last member of her immediate family was born May 30, 1918, in Cokesbury, SC to the late James Edwards Holmes and Rebecca Robinson Jackson Holmes. She was nurtured in a Christian home and loving family.
Mrs. Evans was a dedicated, faithful and dutiful member of St. Paul AME Church until the Lord called her home. She faithfully served as a Steward, Class Leader, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, fifty-six years as church pianist, president of the local Women’s Missionary Society, two terms.
Eugenia was educated in the public schools of Greenwood County. She attended Brewer Normal School, Bettis Academy, Jr. College, Trenton, SC, and a 1938 graduate of Allen University, Columbia, SC. She taught school for near 40 years, beginning her teaching career in a one-room school in McCormick SC, The Cokesbury School for eight years. In 1948 she began a 21 year stint of teaching at The Promised Land School, and with desegregation of Greenwood County Schools in 1970, she began teaching at Lakeview Elementary School. She retired from teaching in 1980.
Mrs. Evans, was an active citizen, volunteer, and leading force in the community. She dutifully served with many auxiliaries and civic organizations: Volunteered at Greenwood County Food Bank and Greenwood Museum, delivered for Meals on Wheels of Greenwood, Ladies Auxiliary of the Hodges-Cokesbury Fire Department, Greenwood Council on Aging, Lower Piedmont Chapter of March of Dimes, Cokesbury-Hodges Homemakers Club, Former Poll-Worker, an avid member of The Cokesbury Family Reunion Club, Women’s Home Aide #98, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and a Life Member of the Connectional Women’s Missionary Society of The AMEC. She was actively involved in numerous works on the district and conference levels and known by many as ‘ole two-fingers’. She was a loving and faithful community servant leader. She received many awards and accolades.
She leaves to cherish her memory: Ms. Vallery C. Smith, great niece, Cokesbury, Mrs. Margaret A. Wilson, God Daughter, Cokesbury, Mrs. Bobbie B. Crews, niece, Charlotte, NC, and ‘Her Baby” Vicky Morris Tribble, Laurens, SC.
She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loving relatives, and friends.
Homegoing services will be held 1pm Thursday, September 29, 2016 at St Paul AME
Church with Pastor Krystal F. Bryant officiating and Rev. Cornell Richardson presiding.
Burial will be in Evening Star Cemetery 110 Memorial Drive, Greenwood, SC 29646
Mrs. Evans will be placed in the church at Noon.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Flower bearers will be nieces.
Honorary escorts will be Stewards of St. Paul AME Church and Piedmont Conference
Branch Women's Missionary Society.
