Mrs. Catherine C. Smith, 82, of 105 St. Kitts Court, Greenwood, SC widow of William H. Smith, passed July 14, 2016, at Self Regional Medical Center, Greenwood, South Carolina
Born in Aiken, South Carolina, July 23, 1933, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Elbert Corbett and Maedell Edney Corbett.
Mrs. Smith was baptized at an early age at Friendship Baptist Church in Aiken and was a graduate of Aiken's Schofield High School, Class of 1951. She was a classically trained pianist and organist from the age of seven.
After moving to Queens, New York, Mrs. Smith became a member of Allen AME Church. She was also a member of the Queen's Chapter of the NAACP, the Baisley Park National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club, and in May1990 received The New York Club Women of Color prestigious award as owner of B& C Travel Agency.
Upon returning to Greenwood, Mrs. Smith joined Tabernacle Baptist Church and became a member of Friends Only Women's Club. She was an avid World Traveler, gardener and gourmet cook
Surviving are a son, William Smith(Georgia) of New York, NY; a daughter, Ms. Karyn Smith of New York, NY; a sister, Mrs. Rosa T. Milledge of Greenwood, SC; and aunt , Juanita Bass of Stamford, CT; and uncle, Lawton Corbett of Brooklyn, NY ; two grandchildren, Briana Smith of New York, NY and Brandon Smith of New Jersey; two nieces, Mrs. Lisha Walker ( Vermond, Jr) of Douglasville, Georgia ; Mrs. Toi Lay (Ken) of Orlanda , Florida ; and godson, Dakota Lewis of Atlanta, GA; and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
Mrs. Smith is also survived by her beloved Maltese twins, Hopie and Tofi of the home.
Home-going services will be held 11:00am, Wednesday, July 20, 2016 from Tabernacle Baptist Church 424 Baptist Avenue, Greenwood, SC with Pastor John Aiken officiating, assisted by Pastors Rebecca Aiken and Hattie Henderson.
Mrs. Smith will be placed in the church at 10:00am at which time the family will receive friends until 11:00 am.
Pallbearers and Flower bearers will be friends and family.
Burial will follow in Jasmine Memorial Park, Aiken, South Carolina.
Public viewing will begin at 1pm Tuesday, July, 20, 2016 at Percival Tompkins Funeral Home.
